Leaders of State Veterinary Technician Associations and Veterinary Technician Specialty Academies are invited to attend the 2020 NAVTA Veterinary Technician Leadership Summit!

The NAVTA Veterinary Technician Leadership Summit is held in conjunction with the American Veterinary Medical Association’s Veterinary Leadership Conference (VLC) to which all of you are invited to attend.

8:10-9 AM Session 1

The Value of Associations, Adrian Hochstadt

Description:

Associations are typically created to establish unity, alignment, and strength in working towards common goals.  During this session participants will learn from AVMA Deputy CEO Adrian Hochstadt the value of associations and the value of membership and volunteer leadership on individual, organizational, and societal levels.

Learning Objectives:

1.       Discuss the value of associations to the individual as well as to the profession and society.

2.       Compare and contrast levels of engagement within and between associations.

3.       Compose next steps for those seeking to deepen their association engagement.

 

9-9:50 AM Session 2

Effective Board Leadership - Roles & Responsibilities, Dr. Mia Cary

Description: The strength of an association is dependent upon the leadership effectiveness of staff and volunteers.  During this session Dr. Mia Cary, Cary Consulting CEO and Change Agent, will facilitate a discussion on the roles and responsibilities of association staff and volunteers.  In addition attendees will explore the ways members, staff, and volunteer leaders can work together to optimize results and impact.  Participants will be provided a roadmap for content application that will be utilized for the entire program.

Learning objectives:

1.       Compare and contrast the role of association volunteer leader, staff leader, and member and the benefits of a diverse board.

2.       Evaluate the responsibilities associated with key association staff and volunteer positions.

3.       Discuss ways to create an environment of motivation for optimal board engagement.

10:10-11 AM Session 3

Board Communication and Prioritization, Dr. Mia Cary

Description: Ineffective communication is part of every problem, and effective communication is part of every solution.  During this session Dr. Mia Cary will compare association communication strategies and discuss how prioritization is embedded within every effective communication model.  Participants will be invited to practice providing feedback to peers, volunteer leaders, and association staff.

Learning Objectives:

1.       Discuss effective and ineffective association communication approaches.

2.       Compare board prioritization models.

3.       Practice providing feedback to association volunteers and staff.

12:45-1:35 PM Session 4

Lessons Learned by a WVLDI and VetPartners Board Member, Dr. Deb Stone

Description: During this session, Dr. Deb Stone, current Women’s Veterinary Leadership Development Initiative (WVLDI) and VetPartners board member will share lessons learned while serving as a volunteer leader. 

Learning Objectives:

1.       Discuss the path from member to volunteer leader.

2.       Compare how personal growth from mistakes or missed targets can often exceed personal growth from flawless execution.

3.       Compare and contrast leadership requirements and communication flow between two veterinary associations.

 

1:35-2:25 PM Session 5

Association Membership Essentials, Dr. Mia Cary

Description:  Members are the center of most current associations, but will they be in the future?   Join us as Dr. Mia Cary describes the benefits of both member and non-member associations models and facilitates a discussion on how to make the most of your current membership model.

Learning Objectives:

1.       Compare the benefits of member versus non-member associations.

2.       Analyze association recruitment and retention models.

3.       Create individualized next steps for membership growth.

2:45-3:45 PM Non-Dues Revenue Revitalization - Dr. Mia Cary

Description: Non-dues revenue is any money made by an association outside of dues.  During this session Dr. Mia Cary will facilitate a discussion on the basics as well as best practices associated with non-dues revenue programs and channels.  In addition, participants will be invited to share experiences and lessons learned and will finalize their personalized roadmap for content application.

 

Learning Objectives:

1.       Understand the basics and best practices associated with non-dues revenue generation.

2.       Compare and contrast non-dues revenue channels.

3.       Create individualized next steps for personal and association growth.
