Ivermectin Friend and Foe
Spring 2004
Ivermectin is FDA approved for use in dogs as a heartworm
preventative at a minimum dosage of 6 mcg of ivermectin per
kilogram of body weight and for use in cats as a heartworm
preventative at a minimum dosage of 24 mcg of ivermectin per
kilogram of body weight. Although manufacturers do not recommend
use outside of approved label instructions, extra label drug
use is allowed by the FDA under the specific conditions of
the Animal Medicinal Drug Use Clarification Act.
